FACTS

WOMEN IN CONGO

Violence against women and girls in the Congo are "deep-seated cultural norms"

Congo was called the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman.

48 women are raped in the Congo every hour.

CHILDREN IN CONGO

Parents pay for their children to attend elementary and high schools.

The costs for education are almost as high as the per capita income.

Only 50% of children age 6 - 11 attend primary school.

Cities in the Congo may host as many as 20,000 street children.

Testimonials

I owe a whole lot to My Child & Me. Without them our family would have been without food or shelter. Today my children are able to go to school, we have a shelter over our heads and food to eat. All thanks to this beautiful organization.

YOUR INVOLVEMENT

THE NEED

40% of women and girls have been raped in the Congo. These women are often shunned and abandoned after sexual assaults. The stigma of rape compels hundreds of thousands of men in eastern Congo to shun their wives and abandon them. As such, many mothers in the Congo are raising families alone.

These abandoned mothers with children are among the most vulnerable in the society. They live in abject poverty while having to provide for a family, shouldering the burden of shame, physical and psychological trauma, unwanted pregnancies alone.

These mothers are ill-equipped to raise their children in a healthy environment. As such, sex crimes and child labor have increased among “street children”. The impact of abandonment on these families is a general denigration and deterioration of the family unit as a whole.
